Cleveland, OH – The Cleveland Orchestra has announced details of its 13th year of its Miami residency, which includes concerts as well as education and community programming. Concerts will take place across two weeks in January and February 2019, with the first weekend featuring Music Director Franz Welser-Möst leading a Mahler symphony, followed a week later by guest artist Barbara Hannigan singing and conducting a program featuring works by Haydn, Debussy, Sibelius, Gershwin, and Berg.  All four evening concerts take place at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County’s John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall. The Adrienne Arsht Center has been the presenting partner of the Orchestra’s Miami concerts since the annual residency began in 2007.

Praise of The Cleveland Orchestra under the artistic leadership of Welser-Möst includes The New York Times calling the ensemble “… American’s most brilliant orchestra,” “… bold, brave, even radical…” and The Wall Street Journal stating that the Orchestra is “… magnificent.”

“This annual series of concerts for our Miami residency, presented in partnership with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, offers the South Florida community performances by one of the world’s most-acclaimed symphony orchestras — in Miami’s own world-class concert hall,” says André Gremillet, Cleveland Orchestra Executive Director. “In every city we perform, we celebrate the music-loving communities and the many people who believe in the power of music to change lives.  Here in Miami, we are excited to continue and build on our efforts across the past dozen years to offer extraordinary musical experiences and to inspire future generations through the power and passion of music. As in years past, our 2019 residency in Miami includes performing for Miami-Dade County Public School students in Knight Concert Hall, as well as presenting programs in Miami area schools, and an ongoing partnership with the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.”

On January 25 and 26, Franz Welser-Möst conducts Mahler’s Second Symphony premiered in 1895 and nicknamed the “Resurrection” Symphony. In this powerful work, Mahler reflects on the meaning of life and death, and of humanity’s unending search for eternal meaning. “The poet Goethe said immortal things on this subject,” Mahler wrote, referring to humanity’s place in the universe. “What I want to say I am naturally only able to express fully in music. . . That is what has been given to me and for that I will be called to account.” The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and acclaimed international soloists soprano Joélle Harvey and mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke join the Orchestra. For biographical information about Ms. Harvey and Ms. Cooke, please see these links: http://www.joelleharvey.com/details-aubrey/ and https://imgartists.com/roster/sasha-cooke/.

On February 1 and 2, the Orchestra is joined by guest conductor and soprano soloist Barbara Hannigan, and principal flute player Joshua Smith is featured as soloist in Debussy’s “Syrinx.” Ms. Hannigan is making her U.S. conducting debut with these performances in Miami. She will conduct Haydn’s Symphony No. 86 and then lead and sing Sibelius’s hypnotically challenging tone-poem Luonnotar. To close the program, she sings (and conducts) the gripping, psychologically-charged Suite from Alban Berg’s opera Lulu, followed by an indescribably fun-filled suite of music from George Gershwin’s Girl Crazy Suite. To view a performance of Ms. Hannigan performing Girl Crazy Suite, see this link: https://youtu.be/ZHvOTaxRwNA. Ms. Hannigan won a 2018 Grammy Award for Best Classical Solo Album recording. Update: Prelude Concerts

Prelude Concerts with members of The Cleveland Orchestra performing in chamber ensembles will take place one hour prior to the start of the concerts on January 26 and February 1 and 2. These performances are free of charge to audience members attending each evening’s concert. Updated details of the programs and musicians performing is listed below in the Program Information section.

Education Concert and Activities

For the 13th year, the Orchestra will co-present an education performance with the Arsht Center for 3,600+ students in the Miami-Dade County Public School District at Knight Concert Hall on January 29 and January 30. The theme “Meet the Awesome Orchestra" takes students inside the orchestra to explore the four instrument families (strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion) and the teamwork required to perform as an ensemble. These dynamic concerts introduce students to live orchestral music — a first-time experience for most. Members of the media who are interested in covering education concerts and programs may request access by contacting Justin Holden at jholden@clevelandorchestra.com.

Update: January 25, 28, and 29: Four Music Explorers concerts will be performed by Cleveland Orchestra musicians, including cellist Martha Baldwin, pianist Carolyn Warner, trumpet player Jack Sutte, and pianist Joela Jones, for Miami Dade County Public School students at Bright/Johnson Elementary School, Norma Butler Bossard Elementary School, Oliver Hoover Elementary School, and South Hialeah Elementary School. Music Explorers concerts introduce children in grades K-2 to the instruments of the orchestra, one at a time, with Cleveland Orchestra musicians and a host who engages children through singing, clapping, and moving to the music. Each 30-minute, music-packed adventure also features short selections and instrument demonstrations designed to inspire and entertain young music explorers.

Update: January 25: Cleveland Orchestra/Coral Reef High School Partnership - Cleveland Orchestra musicians return to Coral Reef for masterclass coaching with string orchestra students on advanced repertoire.
